Learning Pilates

I’m not learning yoga only at my class as my instructor was trained in pilates. Sometimes, we will practice some pilates moves and it’s more tiring as comparing to yoga. If you are not familiar with pilates, The Star has an article about it.
The origins of Pilates can be traced back to the early 20th century. Initiated in England during the First World War, Pilates was named after its founder, Joseph H. Pilates, who developed this programme to improve the rehabilitation programmes for the many returning veterans.
Pilates called his method Contrology, as he believed this method used the mind to control muscle movements.
Over the years, instructors have summarised six principles that represent the essence of Pilates, which is using the mind-body connection to perform movements with “centering, concentration, control, precision, breathing, and flowing movement.”

Nah, you will be wondering how to do that pose huh? LOL! But it takes time and lots of practice to get into that. I have been suffering from backache since my 2 pregnancies, but I believe that pilates helps me a lot in getting back to my posture. I’m still having some problems with flexibility but I like the feeling of relaxing muscles each time I am back from the classes.
This is what I quoted from Pilates Foundation:
It is beneficial for:
- General fitness and body awareness
- Pregnancy: Pre and post natal
- Injury prevention
- Remedial and rehabilitation work
- Improvement of technique for athletes and dancers
- The elderly
- For children from 12 years-old
Pilates helps to:
- Increase and create a balance between strength and flexibility
- Create an awareness of and strengthen dynamic stability
- Improve coordination
- Release stress
- Improve posture
